Kids' Birthday Party Ideas & Themes

Your kids only have one birthday each year, so why not make that day extra special? If you’re looking for amazing birthday party themes, child-friendly party food, ideas for fun games, and help with tidying up afterwards, then you’ve come to the right place. We’ll help you give your kids a birthday party they’ll never forget!

Kids’ Birthday Ideas, Themes & Decorations

There are two very popular birthday party themes – cars and princesses. However, chances are that your kids have already been to a dozen car- or princess-themed parties this year. For an original twist on an old party idea, you can find all kinds of fresh ideas online – Pinterest, for example, is a great place to find inspiration. Here are some alternative themes you might like to explore:

  • Fairy Garden Party

Even if you don’t have a garden, you can transform your home into a magical, mystical secret garden with the help of some clever decorations. You could bring in some fake plants, paper folded in the form of flowers, and you could even make your own miniature white picket fence out of some sticks and twigs and some white paint. This is a wonderful twist in the traditional princess theme – just make sure you have a supply of fairy wings handy for the guests to wear. For games and activities, consider handing out bags of ‘fairy dust’ (glitter), or setting out a craft table for kids to make their own fairy wands.

  • Superhero Party

Encourage guests to come dressed as their favourite superhero, complete with mask and cape. For decorations, you could create simple cityscape backdrop using cardboard, with superheroes flying across the sky. You could also opt for cartoon-style decorations, with a focus on reds, yellows, blues, and blacks – in keeping with the traditional uniforms of classic heroes like Batman and Superman.

A great activity is to hide something in your house, such as a final birthday present, or the last piece of cake, and tell the kids that a cranky villain has stolen it! Provide clues to help the kids locate the missing treasure and defeat the bad guy. Whatever birthday themes you choose, just make sure you have fun! Adding streamers, balloons, and a piñata or khoi bag or two just adds to the excitement – you could even make your own!

Party Food Recipes

Kids don’t want a sit down dinner, or anything really fancy – what they do want is a few easy-to-eat snacks that they can devour in between fun games and activities. Here are some quick and easy finger foods you can rustle up in no time:

  • Baked Shakarkandi

For a healthy alternative to fries, chop some shakarkandi, or sweet potato, season as desired, and bake for around 30 minutes. Kids can grab a handful to eat whilst taking part in the birthday festivities.

  • Eggless Cake

Of course, it’s not a real party without cake! If you and your kids follow a vegetarian diet, there are plenty of eggless recipes out there – try this tasty chocolate cake, for example. As substitutes for eggs, you could try using applesauce, yogurt, or bananas instead – it really works! You could even bake the cake together the day before the party. Don’t worry if the fun results in a few chocolate smudges on their clothing – this article on removing chocolate stains is here to help.

The Big Birthday Party Tidy Up

If there’s one thing you can guarantee, it’s that your home will look messy after your child’s birthday party. Don’t worry about it. The most important thing is that your kids had fun. No matter how messy your house is, it can easily be cleaned. Dirty dishes can be scrubbed after a good soak with a bit of dishwashing soap – put them in the basin as soon as you can, and the food will be softened and easy to remove by the time the guests have all gone.

Cake-encrusted clothes can be put through the washing machine with a good quality detergent, and mucky carpets can be sorted with a store bought or homemade carpet cleaner (water, baking soda, and vinegar works well) and vacuumed to freshen them up. There’s no mess your children and their friends can make that you can’t handle, so don’t sweat it!
